Our Community

Union is a small city, just 1960 residents.  We haven't grown in the last 20 years, but things are starting to change.  There is more interest from people who are looking for our unique lifestyle and advantages.  Union is the kind of town where everyone knows everyone.  We have the advantage of a small, hometown atmosphere with the potential for slow, controlled economic growth.  In Union, children are safe to go to great schools.  There are no traffic jams.  You have the right to right to use your own property with no homeowner's association telling you what to do.  It may take a little longer to get things done, and you may have to drive a couple of hours to find a fancy shopping mall - but you will find everything you need right here.

From Union we have access to amazing outdoor adventure.  Most of our local residents spend as much time outdoors as they do indoors.  For more details, go to Outdoor Opportunities.

We are an agricultural community.  Don't be surprised if you run into a cattle drive on Main Street in the early hours on a Saturday.  Ranching and farming are the backbone of our economy.  Locals spend the summer bringing in hay, raising crops and tending their herds.  Even in the city limits you will find horses, sheep and other livestock.

Our schools have outstanding teacher to student ratios.  They count on parent and community interaction and support.  Yet, they still offer the children a great environment for learning and opportunities for sports and other extra-cirricular activities.  For more information, try the Union School District website.

We are working on the future.  Local residents have built partnerships with state and local resources to help us plan for the controlled growth of Union and its surrounding area.  In order to entice prospective companies to locate here, we have designated the city an Enterprise Zone, which provides substantial incentives.  We are searching for modest sized companies that are eco-friendly and are looking for a place where they can find the workforce they need and enjoy the slow-paced lifestyle we have to offer.  Transportation is not a problem for moving supplies in and product out.  We are just 11 miles from I-84, the La Grande Airport and the Union County Industrial Park.  There is a 30-acre EPA-approved industrial site in one of the most scenic spots in town.

This lifestyle isn't for everyone, just those who want to be part of a quiet, unhurried community.
