Each City Councilor is elected for four years.
Candidates file for office by the August deadline in an election year and
campaign until the November general election. The successful candidates
take office at the first general meeting in January, which is the second Monday
of the month. The next election will be in November of 2008 when three
council positions will be open, as well as the Mayor's position.
The City Council performs a formal, official city governance role, as
well as an informal role as civic leaders and democratic representatives of the people.
Formally, the city council is elected to steward the public trust and to serve as
financier, employer, legislator and policy maker, and a quasi-judiciary body.
The council's informal leadership role is one of staying connected to the community and
reconnecting the citizens with their local government.
