The Planning Commission was established by Ordinance 259, April 11, 1966. It is to consist of 7 members appointed by the Mayor and approved by the City Council. Two members are allowed to be nonresidents of the city. The Planning Commission has one City Councilor who serves as an Ex-Officio member who is not allowed to vote. By ordinance, the term of appointment is 4 years. Their mission is to promote and facilitate the orderly development of the City of Union by reviewing land use proposals and applying Union's Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Ordinance, Comprehensive Plan and other city ordinances. Their decisions are written in the form of a recommendation to the City Council. The Planning Commission meets on the third Wednesday of every month.

Basic planning requirements in the City of Union: Before building, you must get approval from City Hall to make sure you will be in compliance with Ordinance 337. Minimum lot size for new lots and parcels in the R-1 zone shall be 7,500 square feet Minimum lot frontage is 60 feet, except for in a cul de sac where lots must have at least 30 feet of street frontage. There shall not be more than one dwelling and its accessory buildings constructed on one lot. Setback requirements: 20 feet from front yard line 10 feet from side yard line 10 feet from rear yard line Accessory structures minimum setback requirements shall be five feet from side yard or rear yard lines.
